When nothing brings joy anymore – and you don't know why

You might know the feeling: The alarm rings and you would prefer to just stay in bed. Not because you are tired – but because you have no strength. The day ahead feels like an endless task. Things that used to bring you joy leave you cold. Your thoughts revolve around the same topic, over and over, without any solution. You feel empty, hopeless, as if paralyzed.

This is not a weakness. This is not a flaw in character or a lack of willpower. Depression is a serious illness – and it has a neurobiological basis. The activity in certain brain areas is altered, neurotransmitters are out of balance, and the connections between different regions are disrupted.

The good news: Your brain is adaptable. It can learn to take new paths. Neurofeedback is a drug-free method that starts exactly there – and can help you find your way out of depression, step by step.

How depression shows in the brain

Depression is not "just" a feeling of sadness. It is a state that affects your entire thinking, feeling, and acting. Neurobiologically, depression often manifests as altered brain activity: The left hemisphere of the brain, which is responsible for positive emotions, drive, and motivation, is frequently underactive. The right hemisphere, which is more responsible for negative emotions and withdrawal, is often overactive.

The consequence: You are stuck in a downward spiral. Negative thoughts dominate, positive ones are barely accessible. Your drive is paralyzed, your self-regulation weakened. You feel like you are in a dark tunnel – and see no light at the end.

Neurofeedback target this directly. It trains your brain to bring activity back into balance. Underactive areas are activated, while overactive areas are calmed. You learn to establish new, positive patterns.

How neurofeedback can help with depression

Neurofeedback is not a replacement for psychotherapy or medication. But it is a valuable supplement that often makes the decisive difference.

You learn to consciously influence your brain activity. Over time, it will become easier for you to step out of negative thought cycles. You will feel drive and motivation again. Your mood stabilizes. The world no longer appears as gray as before.

Many clients report that they have more energy after neurofeedback training. They find it easier to get up in the morning and have a desire to do things they used to enjoy. They no longer feel so hopeless; they see perspectives again.

This is not a miracle, but trained neuroplasticity. Your brain learns to take new, more efficient paths. Step by step, session by session.

What neurofeedback can achieve in depression

Depression is a complex clinical picture, and neurofeedback works on various levels.

It can improve your drive. Many clients report having more energy after the sessions. They can get up easier in the morning and feel like doing things again. The paralyzing lack of drive gives way to a gentle, yet noticeable motion.

It can stabilize your mood. You no longer swing between deep despair and emotional numbness. Your mood becomes more balanced, and the negative phases become shorter and less intense.

It can interrupt negative thought spirals. You learn to consciously guide your thoughts – and to step out of repetitive, distressing thought patterns. The mental carousels become less frequent and lose their power over you.

It can improve your sleep. Many people with depression suffer from sleep disorders – they cannot fall asleep, wake up during the night, or do not sleep deeply enough. Neurofeedback trains your brain to switch into sleep mode. Better sleep is a crucial building block on the way out of depression.

It can strengthen your self-regulation. You learn to better recognize and regulate your emotions. Reflecting empty and hopeless depressive states becomes less overwhelming – you gain more control over your emotional state.

Connection to psychotherapy – and why both belong together

Neurofeedback is not in competition with psychotherapy, but is a valuable supplement. Research shows that neurofeedback can significantly improve the effectiveness of psychotherapy.

The reason: If your nervous system is permanently in a depressive state, it is hard to absorb and implement the contents of psychotherapy. Your brain is like an overloaded computer – new information simply doesn't get through. Neurofeedback calms your nervous system, regulates your brain activity, and makes you more receptive to psychotherapeutic work.

Many clients report that they are much better at implementing their therapy content after neurofeedback training. The work with the therapist becomes more effective, and progress is more evident.

How your training works

Step 1: Test Session (up to 60 minutes, €150 plus VAT)

We will get to know each other, discuss your situation, and measure your brain activity. I will show you how your brain works and where the imbalances lie that contribute to your depression.

Step 2: Individual Training Plan

Based on the measurement results, we develop a training plan tailored precisely to your needs. For depression with lack of drive, we train different areas than for depression with anxiety or sleep disorders. You will receive clear goals and milestones.

Step 3: Regular Sessions (75–90 minutes, €178.50 incl. VAT)

Each session begins with ergonomic and cognitive preparation – movement, posture optimization, sensory activation. This optimally prepares your brain for neurofeedback. If needed, we add biofeedback for bodily regulation.

First noticeable changes – more energy, a more stable mood, better sleep – often appear after just a few sessions. Sustainable, stable effects usually develop after a longer training period.
